Forklifts are powerful industrial machines used for lifting and transporting heavy loads, but they can pose serious safety risks if not operated and maintained properly. Here are some essential forklift safety tips as we wrap up 2023:

1. Training and Certification:
– Ensure that all forklift operators receive thorough training and are certified to operate the specific type of forklift they will be using.
– Provide ongoing training to keep operators updated on the latest safety procedures and best practices.

2. Pre-Shift Inspection:
– Conduct pre-shift inspections of forklifts to identify and address any issues before operation.
– Check for proper tire inflation, brakes, steering, lights, horn, and other essential components.

3. Proper Attire:
– Operators should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, steel-toed boots, and high-visibility clothing.
– Employers are responsible to select the appropriate PPE for their employees.

4. Load Capacity:
– Never exceed the forklift’s rated load capacity. Consult the load capacity on the data plate on the forklift and be aware of the load’s weight and dimensions.

5. Stability:
– Keep the load stable and centered on the forks. Avoid overloading or carrying loads that are unevenly distributed.
– Use caution when driving on uneven surfaces or ramps.
– Loads should be inspected before use

6. Speed Limits:
– Adhere to posted speed limits and adjust speed based on the load, terrain, and visibility conditions.

7. Pedestrian Safety:
– Establish designated pedestrian walkways and ensure that operators and pedestrians are aware of them.
– Use horns and signals to alert pedestrians when a forklift is approaching.

8. Clear Visibility:
– Maintain clear visibility by keeping the load at a safe height while driving and use mirrors effectively.
– Be aware of blind spots and use caution when navigating tight spaces.
– Used a spotter when a load is blocking visibility and there are no mirrors.

9. Parking and Storage:
– Park forklifts in designated areas and ensure they are properly secured when not in use.
– Follow proper shutdown procedures, including lowering the forks and engaging the parking brake.

10. Emergency Procedures:
– Familiarize operators with emergency procedures
– Ensure that fire extinguishers and first aid kits are readily available.

11. Maintenance:
– Regularly inspect and maintain forklifts according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
– Address any issues promptly to prevent breakdowns and ensure safe operation.

12. Communication:
– Establish clear communication protocols between operators and other personnel, especially in busy work environments.

13. Avoid Cell Phone Use:
– Prohibit the use of cell phones or other distractions while operating a forklift.

14. Continuous Improvement:
– Encourage a culture of safety by seeking feedback from operators, conducting regular safety meetings, and implementing continuous improvement measures.

By following these forklift safety tips, businesses can create a safer work environment and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries associated with forklift operations.
